RAFFLE WINNERS!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I had the pleasure of calling our raffle winners yesterday. And what fun it was. We should do more raffles!

Monday afternoon Karl and I headed downstairs from our office with a cookie jar of 672 raffle tickets. We called upon regular customer Kenui, who happened to be in the store, to draw our grand prize winner.

Congrats to Bliss who won the 50 free rentals!

Also congrats to our runners-up. Jordan and Kristin won 5 free rentals. Jenny and Weston won T-shirts.

I actually watched some stuff!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I’ve been very bad about watching movies, I’ve been addicted to the series, and so in an attempt to “get on the wagon” (or is it off??) I forced myself to watch some of the new stuff coming out tomorrow.

Bigger Stronger Faster - A surprisingly charming documentary about the gray area surrounding steroid use. It was kinda like a Spurlock advenure, but without the obvious ego-stroking. I was thrown off by some of the material and information that they had about steroids, and it was great in that it presented a lot of info that supported the use of steroids (or at least didn’t damn it) but still left you with a decision to make on your own whether it is right or wrong. Very recommendable.

Chapter 27 - Okay, I’ll admit it. The only reason I wanted to see this was “Fat” Jared Leto. True, he is quite unrecognizable (and might even have had a decent performance) as a portlier Mark Chapman, killer of John Lennon, but that doesn’t make up for the kinda strange idea that we should sympathize/empathize with a guy who shot someone dead. I didn’t really care much for the rest of the movie, but I did think Leto was pretty creepy. Is he always that way??

Mindscape with Alan Moore - In the wake of the Watchmen movie approaching, Alan Moore’s stock is about to go up (even if the movie is a flop, which I am sure HE wants). I didn’t know what to expect here, but it was essentially Alan Moore, in front of a camera for an hour and a half talking all things, from comics (actually the subject least touched upon) to universal philosophy. Extremely interesting, many of Moore’s takes on politics, religion, and science are quite agreeable, especially because he is so succinct and thorough in his expressions. I enjoyed this very much, despite it’s lack of flash and pizazz. Definitely rent if you dig philosophy and the like.

Showtime - The New HBO

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Remember when HBO was responsible for almost all of the “best of television”? They had Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, The Wire, etc. The world was theirs! In the void that is HBO’s programming, Showtime has moved in as the best non-cable place to fulfill your need for a series.

Weeds - Mary Louise-Parker and co. partake in a very strange and seemingly Lynchian world where a soccer mom is selling weed to keep her family afloat after her husband dies. It’s Suburbia meets a more timid Scarface (at least until Season 3), as we see the lighter and more intense side of drug trafficking. Very strange, often funny, definitely addictive.

Dexter - I never thought I would see Michael C. Hall in anything again after Six Feet Under, but here he is as a serial killer who only kills others who have done wrong. Essentially he is a vigilante who takes pleasure in cutting up the scourge of Miami into tiny pieces. Despite his American Psycho vibe, through his cold and calculating exterior, there is still some humanity that comes through. Oh yeah, and almost the entire cast is from HBO’s Oz. Weeeird.

Californication - Duchovny hasn’t really shone since X-Files, and even then, he was limited to cable. Here, he can swear, get naked, and basically get into whatever trouble he wants. He’s both hilarious and amiable as a self-destructive author who just can’t seem to get himself together. I was surprised at how hilarious and engaging this show was, thus, it’s my favorite of the Showtime series. Think Entourage meets Curb Your Enthusiasm meets…well…David Duchovny. The show is all him being himself. Awesome!

Check them out, but beware the addiction, it’s cost me much, but I think it may have been worth it…

No Jonze, No Gondry, just Kaufman

Monday, September 15th, 2008

ny
That’s right, Charlie Kaufman is actually directing his next screenplay for Synecdoche, New York. It seems like it should be typical Kaufman fair, but I was suddenly really interested in seeing what he will do as a director, having most of his scripts handled by everyone from Spike Jonze to George Clooney in the past.

I also wonder if his brother Donald will be involved, I really enjoy his work as well…

Look for it October 24th, assuming it plays anywhere in the continental U.S. Pickford, I sure hope you are reading…

I heard it from the digital-upper-east-side-kind-of-grapevine…

gossipgirl1

A disclaimer for those of you with seemingly better things to do with your time, ha:

I am well aware that I might get a pie in the face for this one (due to all of it’s publicity right now), I also know that I am thankfully outside of the targeted demographic audience, but let it be known that I wasn’t bribed to write this. Not since the first season of The O.C. (which we don’t have, so don’t get all worked up and carpool down here, huffing and puffing), has a prime time soap opera about wealthy teens grasped my attention like that of the CW’s Gossip Girl. We just got it and I too hesitated taking it home (hence the belated blog), but there’s just something about teenagers with style (with a capital S), drama (with a capital D), and dare I say, hearts, (with a capital <3) that may be worthy of being considered interesting. Gossip Girl is simultaneously well written to accommodate sharply chiseled characters that do very human things, that of course may seem so done they are burnt to a crisp at first glance, but which are actually quite adept at holding their own in the scheme of similar material. The parts about it that truly bother me go hand in hand, the title and the whole blogging aspect (newsflash: there IS a difference in mileage spent on the web between 16 year olds and 20 somethings these days), do creators actually think the two prove to coalesce as an asset for the show? Maybe this is where said demographic and I do not mesh, although I’ll admit it was easy coming up with a title for this blog, which makes me guess every show needs its special edge. I will also always wonder how much thought went into casting characters for the families in Gossip Girl that look alike as well as resemble one another, because it must not have been on the priority list. And please, do not expect much depth, because vapidity is part of the charm. Those things aside, it’s worth a new addiction…and watch out…season 2 just started.

xoxo,
Zoey
