Post A-Doc-alypse

Something I think we can all look for and appreciate in any film is first-and-foremost originality, be it in the story itself or the approach to film making. Ever Since the World Ended (coming out on Tuesday, July 10th) is one of these movies.

Starting 12 years after an epidemic plague has lowered the population of (specifically) San Francisco to 186 people, we are in the aftermath with a couple of guys that are making a documentary of the only subject you could; life since the world essentially ended. Post-apocalyptic movies aren’t anything new, but the idea that someone would pursue making a documentary about it is incredibly inventive, and let’s face it, cheap and accessible to first-time directors Calum Grant and Joshua Litle. The most intriguing aspect to me was treating the documentary as a documentary; interviews with survivors and the “illusion” of a great deal of footage shot edited down to the too-short 78 minute film. It always perks my interest when actors actually act normal and don’t try and force delivery, and at times, I really felt like these were real people talking about real events.

I would have appreciated the film makers to push being even more realistic, such as providing name titles for whoever was being interviewed and showing us “real footage” of the epidemics and their cost on society. There are some times where it gets almost too cinematic, but never distracting. In the end, I can’t hold much against them though because the film really does a nice job of raising some questions and providing some neat insights as to what it might actually be like to reboot an entire species/society. A nice job, especially surprising for a freshman effort. Definitely check it out, and see if you can recognize one of two Mythbusters in the process.
