Brand New Movies that I Watched
I watched four of the movies that hit DVD on Tuesday:
QuinceaƱera - Good stuff. The cast is non-professional and obviously so. The story is low-key, yet sprawls in several directions at once. Nice sense of place — L.A.’s Echo Park — and the gentrification that is currently occurring there. I’ll post my wife’s review here. ***1/2 (out of five)
Crank - Non-stop action saddled with an annoyingly hyperactive camera work and a cutesy, look-how-clever-we-are soundtrack. Some okay action scenes. **
The Illusionist - Gorgeous cinematography, good cast, interesting story — somehow it didn’t quite gel for me, but I can’t explain why. Lots of people liked it more than I did. Worth watching, nevertheless. ***1/2
Idiocracy - Amiable, dumb-yet-smart comedy…would have been better with a pro wrestler or two in the cast. ***
